Similarly equipped tablets force the Honor Pad 8 to assume a lower position in the synthetic benchmarks. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE 5G and the Lenovo Tab P11 Plusare closest to the review sample in terms of performance, but they are a little faster overall. The Apple iPad 2021 and the Xiaomi Pad 5are in a much higher performance league. Due to the somewhat outdated Adreno 610 GPU, the gap to the competition in the graphics benchmarks is even greater. There’s 128GB storage, which isn’t too bad for a tablet of this price, and will likely be enough for most users – if you do need more, though, a microSD card slot gives you up to 512GB extra space. General navigation, app launches and boot times are reasonable, but the Snapdragon 680 starts to struggle if you ask too much of it. For instance, the Honor Pad 8 supports multitasking split-screen views, but you have to be careful which apps you decide to run side-by-side. Google Maps was a no-go, for instance, with performance becoming noticeably jittery. A much-welcome software feature is multi-window viewing, including a split-screen mode that is really useful for multi-tasking between two different apps as the same time in a way that’s a little closer to the desktop experience with a screen as big as this one. Battery LifeLaunched at IFA 2022, the Pad 8 is Honor’s latest tablet and I have been testing it ahead of the official release.
Again, for some people, performance isn’t important, but it did make the user experience a little frustrating at times. Software is the make-or-break feature for tablets, and the Honor-designed Magic UI sadly falls down onto the ‘break’ side of things.
Input Devices & Operation - Only 60 Hz and no active pen input
As we’ve mentioned, the Honor Pad 8 has a 12-inch display. This screen size makes it one of the biggest tablets we’ve seen, save for premium models like the iPad Pro 12.9 or Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Plus or Ultra. The software is Honor’s own Magic UI 6.1 overlaid on Android 12. Honor is now fully separate from Huawei, so it has the full complement of Google Mobile Services that were previously missing from its devices following US legislation. In view of the low price, it is clear that Honor had to cut corners in some areas, such as the Wi-Fi module, which is limited to Wi-Fi 5, and the missing microSD slot. Moreover, the hardware falls a little short in some areas, which is particularly evident in the not too bright IPS display and the SoC. The resolution is 1,920 x 1,200. The resolution is 1200 x 2000, which technically counts as 2K, though its use of LCD tech and 60Hz refresh rate means it’s not the best-looking display around. Honor has achieved a solid tablet debut with the Pad 8. If you are looking for a mid-range Android device that is large as possible and cheap as possible at the same time, Honor's 12-inch tablet is the right candidate because there are currently no cheaper alternatives in this form factor. The tablet generally feels sluggish to navigate, but the issues were worse for things like games or heavier apps. We tried to play Northgard and it kept stuttering, freezing and even crashing, and that’s not even the most top-end game we normally try.As is tradition, you can’t review an Android tablet without complaining about the software experience. While iPadOS has come along in leaps and bounds over the years, Android’s big-screen experience still feels like an afterthought. Our main gripe with the Honor Pad 8 is that it felt slow – slower, in fact, than other similar-priced slates. The Honor tablet has a 5MP front and 5MP rear camera. Of course, you’re probably not buying this for photography, because even a dirt-cheap phone has better snappers, but they’re fit for purpose. Still, at least the Honor Pad 8 isn’t hamstrung with a restricted version of Android like Huawei’s mobile offerings. All the Google apps are there, and the entire Play Store library is at your fingertips. There weren’t any bloatware apps pre-installed on my review device, either, which is always a big bonus.
