Piglet is the searing, unforgettable and original debut which is set to take readers by storm in 2024. but I never actually believed it; the smug privilege and pointlessness of just about everyone in the book left me struggling to understand why I was supposed to care for or about any of them - it's all very well to employ character stereotypes for a fun shorthand so the audience knows what to expect, but to never step beyond the stereotypes is the mark of a lazy author. India Knight does a fantastic job of capturing the essence of Mitford's original story but brings overlays modernity that makes it more relatable for today. Uncle Matthew is now a retired rock-star who wants to protect his children from the tabloids; Lord Merlin, the effete neighbour in Mitford’s original, becomes fashion wunderkind Merlin Berners (a nod to Lord Berners, who inspired the character); Davey, obsessed with his health, fits seamlessly into the modern world: “‘I have a lot of time for the late Dr Mayr’s method. But Darling is a treat, with whip-smart dialogue, larger-than- life characters, witty observations and a heart-breaking twist .

His violently arbitrary, Nicky Haslam-style hatreds pepper the pages: enoki mushrooms, thin socks or open-mouthed Instagrammers. Linda’s life is charted from early adolescence, and takes in her loves and losses, successes and failures. There were a lot of sidetracked and half-completed conversations - I could picture them all talking while eating, cleaning the house, watching TV and doing a million other things at the same time.
