Christina Aguilera reveals she needed FOUR people to help her move in her gown while filming elaborate Menulog ad Talk about the world's best job! A DOUGHNUT SCIENTIST reveals how she is creating a healthier future for bakery... As a gardener and as a writer, she is more free associator than purist. She responds to the “genius of place”, but without being slavish. She has planted 150 trees, her planting not always indigenous (although she has manfully resisted the temptation of peonies). In one chapter, her gaze strays beyond her plot to consider her 18th-century neighbour William Pitt and reflect that he would have sorted her patch at speed, “had the spring tapped, built a hermitage, opened up vistas, replanted orchards”. She adds that she admires “that bravura approach to life without at all being able to emulate it”.

I expected to be inspired by this book - I’ve recently read a couple of other nature writers such as John Lewis-Stempel. But my take on A Wood of My Own began to change early on as it dawned on me that the author’s intention was not to just love the wood, experience it for what it was, understand it and live it - but to change it. Control it. Of course, that’s what gardeners do. Yes, I understand that woodland has to be managed. But this particular bit of Bucolic Bunburying began to strike me as absurd. This book read like something I can imagine a group of women reading in a book group over a cup of extremely British tea while taking delicate bites from a scone. And they will pronounce scone as like 'cone' but with the S in the beginning. Urgh. This book also raises the spectre of the serious issues of our time species loss and the impact that humanity has on the natural world, Ruth approaches this issue thoughtfully and with the empathy of an individual who cares about her footprint on the world. The book was a pleasure to read. But though the hard work continues, so do the rewards, growing in richness each year. The friend who first asked that key, searching question later admitted: ‘I couldn’t see it before, but I get it now.’

White Lotus stars Meghann Fahy andLeo Woodall cozy up while strolling arm-in-arm in NYC... after confirming real life romance By choosing this route, she neither conserves the orchard with its historical interest, nor the wood with its ecological one; instead creating a forest garden (a term which she refuses).
